By collaborating with the community and state, Mālama ʻOhana seeks to redesign and recommend transformative changes to Hawaiʻi’s existing child welfare system – by working alongside families who have lived experience in the system.

The members of the Mālama ʻOhana Working Group (MOWG) would like to thank the community for joining the monthly meetings and enriching the discussion with their insight and experiences in the child welfare system. We encourage and welcome community participation and look forward to continue this work together. At the November meeting, the working group agreed to create the following Permitted Interaction Groups (PIGs):

1.  Keiki & ‘Ōpio (Children & Youth)

2.  Mākua & ‘Ohana (Parents & Family)

3.  Lawe Hānai (Caregivers)

4.  Hui Kaiāulu (Community Supports)

5.  Hui Hoʻopūlama (Systems Supports)

6.  Kanaka & Po‘e Pasifika (Native Hawaiian and other Pacific Islanders)

At the October meeting, the MOWG agreed that they would adopt a designed alliance process to facilitate the work. A designed alliance promotes clarity with how to engage with each other and how to communicate through tension and conflict.

The Mālama ʻOhana Working Group (MOWG) would like to hear from you. The working group would greatly appreciate your voice and participation at the following working group events:

  1. Monthly Zoom Meetings. Public comment and participation are welcomed at the MOWG monthly zoom meetings. Notice, agenda, and zoom link for the monthly MOWG meetings are posted here on https://www.malamaohana.net and at Office of Wellness and Resilience State Calendar at https://calendar.ehawaii.gov/calendar/.

  2. Listening Sessions. MOWG will hold listening sessions statewide to engage community participation. Information on listening session dates and locations will be posted here at https://www.malamaohana.net and at Office of Wellness and Resilience State Calendar at https://calendar.ehawaii.gov/calendar/.

  3. Permitted Interaction Groups (known as "PIGs"). To assist the MOWG in doing the work, the working group will form PIGs to investigate matters relating to the official business of the working group. Public input and participation is appreciated to support the PIGs work. Information on PIG topics and how to participate will be posted here at https://www.malamaohana.net.

Governor Green accompanied by community leaders signed Mālama 'Ohana into law signifying the State's commitment to uplift the voices of 'ohana and keiki affected by the Child Welfare System.
